2nd Wallingford Newsletter – October 2017
Thanks to all for your support
It seems like a long time since our last newsletter – which means that loads of great things have happened in the meantime which we need to thank you for. Those involved in the planned 2018 trip to Kandersteg, Switzerland are working hard on fundraising for the trip (the Kandersteg Fund), but we also continue to fundraise for the Group.
- We raised £100 by delivering burgers to cyclists and helpers at the Wallingford Cycle Festival (Kandersteg Fund)
- We raised £450 by providing the refreshments at the Castle Gardens Brass Band concert in July (Group)
- We raised £600 by helping on the Climbing Wall and with bucket collection at the Bunkfest This sum was split between the Kandersteg Fund and the Group.
- Many thanks to Jane Titchener, who organised an excellent Family Quiz Night at the Town Hall, raising £510 for the Kandersteg fund.
Many thanks to all who have supported some or all of these activities, we couldn’t do it without you! The funds we raise will all go towards ensuring our young people have the best Scouting experience possible.
Section Activities
All of our sections continue to be very active, here is just a flavour of what has been happening. The Scouts have been working on their behaviour code and anti-bullying statement, as well as their Photographer Badge. Thanks to the members of Wallingford Photography Club who have helped on this. Two teams did us proud at the recent County Patrol Competition Weekend (CPCW) camp recently, plus several of our young people have recently attended the selection weekend for the 2019 International Jamboree in the USA. The Cubs have been working on their First Aid badge and have a sponsored walk planned to November to raise funds for the Sue Ryder Hospice. Our Beavers are looking forward to Sing-Along-A-Santa, the highlight county event of the year (with special guest in a red suit, possibly with reindeer too).
Thank you to all our Leaders and parent helpers!
Andrew & Wilding Ceremony
You will be aware that every September there is a ceremony on Wilding Road to commemorate those two brave soldiers who gave their lives to save Wallingford. Every year awards are made to two 2 Cubs who have distinguished themselves in some way in the past year. This year the awards were presented to Thomas Carver and Alex Nicklin – congratulations to both!
Welcome to our new Scout Leader
We are delighted to welcome Emma Merryfield to our Group – Emma has recently moved to the area, and will be joining Max in working with the Monday night Sylvatica Scout Group. Please join us in making Emma welcome.
We are also delighted to announce that Helen Liddar, our Group Scout Leader, has been awarded her Wood Badge. The Wood Badge course is a foundational component of the adult training program in Scouting; and one which all adult leaders in Scouting undertake. The award recognizes their significant achievement in leadership and direct service to young people.
Remembrance Parade
We will be joining the march through Wallingford on Remembrance Sunday 12th November. Please meet at 10.40am in the Goldsmiths Lane car park (details to be confirmed).
